Pancake Rocks, Punakaiki, New Zealand

A very popular place to stop on State Highway 6, on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is at the Pancake Rocks where unusual geological formations can be seen. These rocks are actually layered limestone strata that look like pancakes piled high on top of one another. But more interesting, is the way that they have been eroded by the rough West Coast seas that constantly pound on them. The site is very accessible by a number of walkways winding through the rock formations. It takes about 20 minutes to visit the site.
