The Door to Hell

A Rodin Sculpture titled "door to hell" inspired by the work of Dante. This is located at the Rodin Museum which is in Rodin's atelier. The individual details on this door are difficult to capture in a photo but they are quite haunting. This particular idea of hell is not based on anything remotely scriptural but seems to have been an invention of man used to control and bend people to the will of the religious authorities at the time. They used stories, like Dante's as a way to embellish religious texts that do not portray hell in this way. This is much the same way that religious conservatives today use similar stories, like those of Frank Peretti, to create an environment of fear and control as well as enforce an ideological purity amoung their adherents. These stories are simply extra-biblical fiction used by conservatives for political purposes.
