Waitangi

Waitangi, at the very North of the country, is a hotbed of Maori culture and the also the setting for the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. This document formalised the arrangement between the Maoris and the British, and is still controversial today. This is a "Marae" or meeting house, which stands at the centre of most Maori communities.
