Dust Storm on the Playa

This is the Big Bend desert section of the Chihuahuan Desert that straddles the U.S. and Mexican border. It was mid Spring in March and windy, mild cold fronts were still sweeping through. This one kicked up some dust on the old playa that sits just in front of the Glass Mountains in the background. The Glass mountains are famous for exposing a large section of the Permian strata (300 - 250 million years ago mya).

Believe it or not, but this is considered green by Big Bend standards ;)

This desert doesn't have Saguaro cacti of the lower Sonoran desert further west, but is dominated by Yuccas, Ocotillo, and Mesquite in the lower regions. The higher mountain islands in this desert support more tree dominated ecosystems.

This is dedicated to Ingrid Douglas who has learned to treasure the wide open spaces. This one is for you Ingrid! www.flickr.com/photos/perfectoarts/7112200975/
