Sitting at the arcade looking out, this is what you see: bicycles. The city is crammed with them!
But there is also the building across. It is one of the 3 so called Berlage Blocks that were designed by Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934), a famous Dutch architect who is responsible for quite a few buildings here in Amsterdam.
All three Berlage Blocks are so called Rijksmonumenten. It means they are on a list that contains our National Heritage. And that means they are protected. So if you e.g. live in a house in one of these Berlage Blocks you cannot just do stuff to it, like change the layout of the house, knock down a wall. Here's a link to what it is exactly, for those interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijksmonument
