Brass bell on Stad Amsterdam, looking at The Amsterdam

My agenda to the Scheepvaartmuseum is to see that other ship in a distance, The Amsterdam, which is a 1980s replica of a Dutch East Indiaman (clipper ship that sailed in the 1740s). However, when I got to the museum, another interesting ship, Stad Amsterdam, was also at the dock and open to the public, probably because it's Open Monumentendag.

Entering the Stad Amsterdam requires a special registration and a photo ID. Thankfully I always carry my passport with me when I sightsee.

Stad Amsterdam is a modern three-masted clipper built in 2000 based on a mid-19th century frigate named Amsterdam. It's not a replica because its hull is made of steel and not wood.

To the surprise of many, this ship is actually owned by the city of Amsterdam and its mission is to promote Amsterdam around the world.

Stad Amsterdam offers both adventurous sailing and luxury cruises. Its 2014 sailing schedule includes:

1) 2014 August: adventurous sailing between Hamburg and Portsmouth

2) 2014 September: day sailing trips in IJmuiden (Netherlands)

3) 2014 November to December: IJmuiden to Leixoes (Portugal) to Santa Cruz (Aruba) to Martinique.
