Losing My Religion

Day 112 of 365 (Year Two)

Week 66, Assignment 3 for Take A Class With Dave and Dave.

Inspired by REM. I really lost faith with this band back in the early 90's, but when they come out and say "Yep, we lost our way..." I've got to respect that. Show us something inspired by REM.

I'm not the biggest REM fan. I think I might know two songs off the top of my head. Losing My Religion and It's The End Of The World As We Know It (or whatever the title of that song is). In doing research for this assignment, I have come to the conclusion that most of their songs don't make any sense when you read them. Listening might be different, but the lyrics don't make a lick of sense in most of the songs. Maybe it is just me, but I was scratching my head after reading the lyrics to almost every single song.

Anyway, I decided to go with what I knew, as limited as that may be.

Losing My Religion

Life is bigger

It's bigger than you

And you are not me

The lengths that I will go to

The distance in your eyes

Oh no I've said too much

I set it up

That's me in the corner

That's me in the spotlight

Losing my religion

Trying to keep up with you

And I don't know if I can do it

Oh no I've said too much

I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing

I thought that I heard you sing

I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper

Of every waking hour I'm

Choosing my confessions

Trying to keep an eye on you

Like a hurt lost and blinded fool

Oh no I've said too much

I set it up

Consider this

The hint of the century

Consider this

The slip that brought me

To my knees failed

What if all these fantasies

Come flailing around

Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing

I thought that I heard you sing

I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream

That was just a dream

The PSing wasn't really that hard. Getting Kathy on top of a ladder at 11:30 at night in our parking lot, along the road, shooting off an almost full power flash..........that was harder! And I have reaffirmed my neighbors' belief in my insanity! LOL

I like this one. Love the effects. I think I haven't listened to or cared about R.E.M. in so long that I just might sit back and enjoy everyone else's photos. This is the one song I kept coming back to, but wasn't sure how to execute it. Nice job. :)

Great idea and good photoshopping. I really like the representations with the light and the shadow. There's something about it that is displeasing to the eye and I can't figure out what it is - maybe the light on your face is too gray?

    Thanks!

Probably just my face! ;-) LOL

Great concept, and the shadow work is really nice. The light beams just seem a little off to me, though-- I can't really explain it. Maybe they're too narrow?
  • Bart 7y

First attempt at doing this. I didn't have much "light" to pull from. It is an interesting little technique.

great solution! I´ve always been a great REM fan, and did not care much about the lyrics, the music was catchy enough. But when I went through my CDs yesterday, I could not find a single title that evoked a picture in me.

Only knowing a handful of songs by them, and then only a few lines of each song I was somewhat limited in my choices. The Losing My Religion line kept coming back to me and this concept actually popped into my head early on. Originally I was going to make the shadow an actual cross but that came off not looking right. After trying that and comparing it to this, I like the shadow of me in a crucifix pose better and I think it makes a stronger composition as well.

Thanks! This one was rather easy as it is pretty much just a clone shot, where the shadow is cloned from a second shot.

I've been going back and looking at it on and off all day and I kinda like how the light is so split up. In my mind I am seeing them move and rotate as if alive, which is OK considering it is supposed to be divine light and not natural light. I would like to shoot one of these in the fog though so that the entire beam shows as light.

Amazing!, I'm an admin for a group called

There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.
