Titus Awakes - Maeve Gilmore
I read a third of Titus Awakes, the new 'Mervyn Peake' Gormenghast book, based on a fragment he wrote and conversations with his wife as he was dying. His wife, Maeve Gilmore, finished it after he died back in the late 1960s and put it away in a drawer. Decades later after her death, her grandaughter discovered it and has decided to get it published.
She needn't have bothered, imo. Titus isn't a very sympathetic character, isn't liked by the other passing characters (such as they are) and fails to achieve almost anything except a very parlous existence. I've more sympathy for the dog!
It's a fairly easy read, but to no great end that I could see, so I've abandoned it.
