Dunstanburgh Castle

The castle was built by Earl Thomas of Lancaster between 1313 and 1322. Dunstanburgh's defences were expanded in the 1380s by John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster. After the Wars of the Roses , it fell into decay by the 16th century and was sold into private hands by James I in 1604. It passed back to the State in 1930 and is now maintained by English Heritage.
