Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina)

Taken in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

As my mom and I were leaving our herping spot, we saw this HUGE gal chilling on the side of the road. We thought she was a pile of sticks and dirt at first, but I was like "Wait a second, that dirt pile has a head!" I got out of the car and at first I thought she was roadkill, since her eyes were closed and she wasn't moving. Turns out she was just taking a nap and sunbathing, and I accidentally woke her up when I brushed some dirt off the top of her shell. I love snappers, they're one of my favorite turtles and I adore seeing them.
