GKN Forge Hammer, Woodside Road, Cwmbran 1972

View from Maendy Way. The GKN lower foundry, also known as "The Malleable", but by the 1960s, officially Precision Forgings. The foundry and the gasometer are gone, the former replaced by Cwmbran Retail Park. To the right can be seen the retaining wall for the "cold" blast furnace dating from the 18th Century. This is still there, but has been screened by a small wood springing up there, really handy for fly tippers. A request to the council to clear this area to show off one of the few remaining examples of industrial heritage in Cwmbran fell on deaf ears. Today, this view is gone, screened by a beech hedge and the Taliesin Flats.
