The Bird House, Mynydd Maen, Pontypool 19 February 2017

When I was a child wandering around the mountain, this building, derelict then, was always referred to as "The Bird House". It was alleged that it had been built there as part of the infrastructure of grouse shooting. I have found no confirmation of this. Some of the bricks scattered around are marked ""Tondu". Far away on the skyline, the "pimple" of Twm Barlwm.

The "Bird House" is at OSGR 25580-98325.

Slater’s Directory of 1880 lists the “Brick & Tile Works, Robert Evans, Tondu. There are various references to this brick works at Aberkenfig, until its closure in 1974 and demolition in 1977.
