Picture A Day January 13, 2010 - Mission San Francisco de la Espada
The southernmost in the string of missions that make up the San Antonio Missions National Historic District, the facade of the Mission Espada. Built in 1756, the mission is now located just south of Loop 410 near the San Antonio River; the small chapel still active with a friary next door. While each of the old Spanish missions have their own unique character, I have always felt the Mission Espada is perhaps the most intimate and friendly; it also receives fewer visitors because it is located so far from the city center.
