Johannes Vermeer was not only an artist but also an art dealer. At the time of his death he had severe financial difficulties as he was unable to sell the paintings in which he traded primarily due to the war between England and France in 1672.
For some time the location of Vermeer's grave remained unknown until the discovery of the Churchwardens accounts in 1968 gave it's precise location within the "Oude Kerk".
In 1975 a memorial tablet commemorating the third centeenary of the great artist's death was unveiled.
