Thomas Mann House | Eröffnung ・Inauguration
On Monday night, June 18, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier inaugurated the Thomas Mann House in Los Angeles. More than 250 guests from culture, science, politics and the media gathered in the house on San Remo Drive in Pacific Palisades, a borrow of L.A. The Manns lived there during their US exile in the 1940s. Mann wrote, among other things, the "Doctor Faustus", the third part of the Joseph Trilogy and his influential speeches to the German Audience, which was broadcast in the Second World War via the BBC to Germany and formed a meaningful counter public to the Nazi propaganda.

In 2016, the federal government bought the property to protect it from demolition. In the future, the house will serve as a residence and space for transatlantic debate with German intellectuals working on topics that pose major challenges on both sides of the Atlantic.

Previously, the delegation found itself in Villa Aurora, just a few kilometers away, where a residency program for German artists has been running since 1995. Also due to this many years of experience, Thomas Mann House is run by the same Berlin based foundation, Villa Aurora & Thomas Mann House e. V.
