Frisner Augustin and photographer Chantal Regnault pose after a performance under the Oriental Pavilion in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Makandal had established an annual commemoration of Bwa Kayiman, a place in northern Haiti where enslaved people met in Augustin of 1791 to plan the Haitian Revolution's initial uprisings. The Community Arts Regrant program of the Brooklyn Arts Council funded the performance in 1999, along with Meet the Composer and the Brooklyn Union Gas Company. The photo, from the collection of Chantal Regnault, was taken by a friend using Ms. Regnault's camera.
