Smart Alec

I saw this bird flip a pizza box open but did not have my camera ready. So we closed the box and stepped back. Sure enough, he did it again.

EDIT: Northwestern crows are among the most intelligent birds. They are great problem solvers (especially when it comes to getting food). They hide food on the beach and use landmarks to find it again. If those landmarks are moved, the crow is unable to find the food. (more...)

TITLE: For many years, Smart Alec or Smart Aleck was thought to be no more than a generic character, first cousin to Clever Dick. Professor Gerald Cohen (Studies in Slang, Part 1, 1985) argues that the original was Alex Hoag, a celebrated and clever thief in New York in the 1840s. (more…)

Of course! It's a crow. Corvidae are known for being scary-smart. There's some debate as to whether or not they use tools to obtain food.

Thanks for your comments. For the next few weeks I will be very busy with moving house, so please forgive me for not visiting your photostreams as much as I would like to. When done, I promise to make up for lost time.

This is great! Thanks for clarification. Calling someone a "smart Alec/k" is so common. I never gave much thought to where the expression originated. It was just something I remember my parents saying.

Good luck on moving. Don't strain your back!
