Four Church Women
This mural of the "four churchwomen" is one of many in El Salvador that honors the martyrs who were killed while peacefully advocating for human rights during El Salvador's violent Civil War. On December 2, 1980 Sr. Dorothy Kazel and lay missioner Jean Donovan drove their van to the El Salvador airport and picked up Maryknoll Sisters Maura Clarke and Ita Ford. Their van was stopped by members of El Salvador's National Guard. They were taken to an isolated location, sexually and physically abused and subsequently killed.
Before her death, Maryknoll Sister Ita Ford offered offered these words of reflection on her work in El Salvador when asked why she took the risk of remaining in El Salvador.
"Am I willing to suffer with the people here, the suffering of the powerless, the feeling impotent? Can I say to my neighbors - I have no solutions to this situation; I don't know the answers, but I will walk with you, search with you, be with you."
