Standard.....Or Not ?
At first glance this looks like a Greater Manchester Standard Fleetline, which incidentally is turning right off the A6 onto Partington Lane. However on closer inspection all is not what it seems. The obvious giveaway is the number and via blinds being on the opposite side to a Standard. Looking closer still, the low driving position and the illuminated 'Please Pay Driver' display on the front panel tells us that this is one of the last batch of Fleetlines that Lancashire United purchased before joining GMT and taking Standards for future deliveries. From the side it became more obvious as these buses were built to the 33ft length as opposed to GMTs 30ft Standard. They also lacked a rear 'bustle', the rear aspect being completely flat.
The date is August 1985 and time was fast running out for the 'Jumbos' and none would see it into 1986, the dual doorway layout not doing them any favours to ensure their survival. One bus from this batch survives (2413) but this is in re-bodied form, the original being destroyed by fire at Hindley depot in the early 80s.
