The Pie Floater. North Adelaide SA
A Pie Floater consists of the traditional Australian meat pie sitting, usually inverted, in a plate of thick green pea soup. It is typically covered with tomato sauce (similar to ketchup) and, although subject to the taste of the individual consumer, mint sauce and salt and pepper are also traditionally added to complement the dish. Another popular condiment is malt vinegar.
In 2003, the pie floater was recognised as a South Australian Heritage Icon by the National Trust of Australia.
Whilst in South Australia we has searched high and low for a Pie Floater. It seemed they were impossible to find these days.
Finally on our last night in Glenelg, after scouring the yellow pages and all other available information, we located a bakery in North Adelaide that did them!!
It meant a 1 hour round trip on the tram, but hey...Pie Floaters were one of our original objectives....we could not leave without trying one!
