Creativity ( female)
Machine embroidery on knitting with hooking.
This is based on a quotation from Goethe - "The realisation of the self is only possible if one is productive, if one can give birth to one's own potentialities"
This is a large wall piece measuring 24inches by 36inches and is part of a series of work concerning the effects of ageing on creativity
I based the cartoon face on Graham Sutherland's Crucifixion in St Matthew's Church, Northampton, and underneath the embroidery I transcribed an article about sperm donors from "The Times".
The circle, which refers both to the reproductive and the creative cycles, is made by hooking hand dyed fabric through the knitted and stitched backgound. This is a traditional women's' craft which is now accorded art status, but has always been "trodden underfoot".
The knitted background forms a timeline from left to right showing how a person's'life has periods of intense creativity, interspersed with quiet, unproductive times
I like to use "women's crafts" to tell the story of women's issues
