October 2017_Natural Building Course: Materials and techniques
During this course participants worked on a small cottage above the main dam area on Jakkalskloof farm in Swellendam. Our course is designed to teach participants how earth works, allowing them to make an appropriate choice based on materials available to them on their own site. Materials and techniques covered included, understanding earth, how to test your earths, basic site layout, mud brick, cob, light earth, rammed earth, compressed earth brick, straw bale, rock, natural plasters, foundations, walls, openings, passive solar design, natural plasters and off-grid solar energy design.
