Winter dawn over Bavaria

Newer Older

Taken a few weeks ago on an early-morning flight from Istanbul to Munich.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments on the last couple of photos. It's been nice to have have some time the last few days to reconnect with several flickr friends. Hope you all had good holidays. Cheers and thanks for stopping by!

This is super cool Jeff! I love those colors and I'm surprised you got such clarity from a plane in low light. Sweet view.

Thanks, all. Chris, one of the nice things about shooting from a plane is that since everything is miles away, you can shoot with the aperture wide open (in this case f/2.8) and still get a good "depth of field." It's sort of counterintuitive, since we usually think about shooting landscapes at f/14 or higher for sharpness in the foreground and distance; but it's really not necessary from so far away...there really is no foreground.

And one benefit of shooting wide open is that most of the dirty spots or scratches on the window disappear, as they are completely out of focus. This also allows you to shoot fairly fast (in this case 1/1000 of a second), to freeze the ground passing by underneath. The only thing that shooting wide open won't cure is any optical distortion or grease/humidity smudging on the windows.

I exposed this one for the horizon, and the foreground was pretty dark out of camera, but I was able to convert a second version of the same RAW file with the exposure brightened considerably to get the snow in the foreground bright enough to be believable. RAW is amazing, for sure. And the D700 sensor sure helps.
