Red Kite

    Newer Older

A Red Kite swooping for food on the Galloway Kite Trail near Castle Douglas, Scotland.

This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail. It was saved from national extinction by one of the world's longest running protection programmes, and has now been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland. It remains an Amber List species because of its historical decline.

At one time confined to Wales, the reintroduction scheme has brought them back to many parts of England, Central Wales and Scotland. The Chilterns and along the Galloway Kite Trail are the best areas to find them.

Excellent picture. I was at the "feeding" station at Laurieston near New Galloway only last week: a fascinating experience. My pictures were disappointing: spent too much time watching than concentrating on taking a good picture!
      Well done you.
