Chandler American Presidency Collection
These portraits are a part of the Presidential Archive’s Chandler Collection. Billie Trimble Chandler was a west Texas native who taught sixth grade history in Japan in the 1970s. During her time there, she met Japanese artist Ohsawa Shoji; she commissioned him to paint portraits of the presidents and first ladies. Working from photographs of official White House portraits, he created a series of portraits running from the Washingtons through the Fords.
