Hakarl or Rotten Shark, Iceland

This is an Icelandic speciality and is definitely an acquired taste. In English it is called rotten shark, or putrid shark or fermented shark. It has a very strong smell and taste of ammonia or urine. After eating a piece you can try to wash the taste away by sipping that clear liquor on the right. It is a highly alcoholic drink called brennivín. I had 3 glasses but I should have had more when I ate that bowl of hakarl.

When I visited Iceland, every tourist I met said it was the most horrible food they had ever tasted but I also met 2 Icelanders who said "I like the shark". I also saw it on sale in the supermarkets.
