Heron Park Sandhill Cranes

Sandhill Crane parent and chick in Vermilion County's Heron Park. PHOTO BY BOB SCHIFO. This is the first record of a Sandhill Crane chick hatched in east central Illinois in 140 years, and is the farthest south Illinois Sandhill breeding activity in modern times. Heron Park is approximately 110 miles SSE of the most southern known Illinois nesting site right now at Goose Lake Prairie State Park in Grundy County.
