Scene in a front line trench

This shows a section of trench about one metre deep, but built up with sandbags to about two metres height on the front side. Three soldiers in the foreground have turned to look at the camera. They have bayonets fixed on their rifles. One man has a small box respirator, of the type issued late in 1916, hung around his neck.


Two of these soldiers have moustaches but it is remarkable that even in the conditions on the Front, soldiers were clean-shaven. The photograph was .
