"Zima's Note" / Jonathan Hamblin / acrylic on canvas / 1990
Jon Hamblin was raised in numerous places that left an impact on his artistic style. His father's medical career took the family to New York City, the Mojave Desert in California, and Haiti, before they settled on Kauai. Hamblin earned a degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, 1975 and joined the peace corps, traveling to Belize and Africa. He returned to the Manoa campus and earned a BFA in 1981 and MFA in 1984 focusing in Printmaking. Hamblin's paintings recall the vibrant colors of Haiti. His figures and angels are inspired by bodysurfing and reproductions of the Sistine Chapel frescoes. He was an art instructor at Mid-Pacific Institute.
