Bembridge and St Helens Fort Walk 2017
St Helens on the Isle of Wight at the start of the Bembridge fort walk 2017. The 'fort walk' is an unorganised annual pilgrimage made by tourists and locals who walk out to Bembridge fort at low tide, which is only possible a few times per year. The date is set by the tide timetable and then people gather (and word is spread) on the beach over two days generally in August. Several thousand people make the walk which involves wading through knee deep water and returning to the beach within the hour, before the tide turns and cuts off their exit. The walk is made possible by a shingle causeway that is only visible during very low tides.
