Shot taken at night (on July 18th, 2012) in the majestic natural amphitheater of the Gracier Blanc, in the core of the Écrins National Park (France), with the mountain range culminating in the famous Barre des Écrins (4.102 m).

I love that mountain !!

On the right you can see my trusted tent illuminated from inside, while on the left (toward south), is visible part of the Milky Way.

This crest mixed rock and ice (approx. 3.200 m), located about 200 meters above the glacier level, worked out as a lovely vantage point in order to get an overall view of the immense environment and, also, to properly convey the sense of scale and height of the surrounding mountains. A very important aspect which totally vanishes at the level of the glacier, for obvious reasons of perspective.

As usual in my night photography, stars are just an integral part of a general concept and composition.

So, like any other genres, photography not at service of the stars, but at service of an idea... of a proper scenic representation.

At least, all this in the best intentions :-) ... then we have to consider all the technical and logistical problems, which are definitely a very substantial aspect in this complex photographic genre.
