Artillery Towers at Sunset

Personal Website

Another sunset shot taken on the summit of Mount Chaberton, a 3.131 metres (10,272 ft) peak in the French Alps in the group known as the Massif des Cerces in the département of Hautes-Alpes.

These ruined Second World War artillery towers are part of a very impressive building, dubbed "Fort of the Clouds".

Built between 1898 and 1910 by the Italians to control the Montgenèvre pass, this fort was then considered as the highest and most powerful of Europe.

Down below, on the left, is clearly visible the town of Sestriere (2.035 m), the main venue during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

The clouds were slowly approaching, during this somehow nostalgic sunset.

Most relevant mountains are: Punta Rognosa (3.280 m), Rocce del Rouit (3.134 m), Monte Platasse (3.159).
