On September 11, 2001, the United States experienced the worst attack of terrorism in its history. The coordinated hijacking of four commercial airliners, the planned attack on symbolic targets, resulted in the deaths of over 3,000 innocent people and cast grief and fear over much of the nation amid extraordinary stories of triumph, hope and heroism.

Flight 93 was scheduled to depart shortly after 8:00 a.m. from Newark, New Jersey en route to San Francisco, California. The Boeing 757, with 44 people on board, was delayed on the runway for several minutes before taking off. Less than an hour into the flight, as the plane was nearing Cleveland, Ohio, the Flight 93 suddenly and abruptly changed course heading southeast in the direction of Washington, DC before eventually crashing into a remote field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Because of the actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard one of the planes, Flight 93, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted.
