London Eye - historic

A rare historic photo of the London Eye from the 1930s, shortly after it was built as a work-relief project in the Great Depression.

Anticipating the petrol rationing of World War II, the spoke design was intended to encourage Londoners to use bikes for transportation. It is believed to be the largest bike wheel in existence, though an even larger one is currently being built in Dubai.

The design also inspired the current Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, to develop his "Boris Bikes" scheme for bike rental kiosks throughout the city. Some have suggested that Boris used a space-time generating device in the Shard to travel back in time to build the Eye.
