Oak Bluffs Mansion - Early Morning

    Newer Older

A little architectural....a little compositing....techical or creative comments welcome...2 second exposure, F22, ISO 100, maybe 5:00 AM. Another, more studied, Martha's Vineyard devotee told me this was Norton's house (Mr. Anti-Virus), and that he spent many millions fixing it up after a disastrous fire. Another early AM sky was dropped in, original was dullest white. Also, various lawn implements and toys removed. Yellow house on left remains after much consideration.

Now I see why you are an architectural photographer Mike! Outstanding! I love the treatment. If you did any compositing it is seemless! I especially like the reflections of the windows. The white adds a ncie contrast to the design.

Wow. Is it HDR? If not, thats incredible, it really pops!
A small crop on the left side may help or a different position/angle....otherwise...amazing shot.

intense HDR. i dont know if it's that that gives me the conept of flatness, but yes it feels very 2-d. I agree with the idea of a bit of a crop. otherwise, great subject matter.

Funny you should mention that, Ottawa refugee. I agonized over whether to kill that yellow house in post. I would have liked to, but I'm trying to streamline how I go after shots like this. I may go back and cut the house...not looking forward to filling the space in Photoshop, though!

Thanks Craig. Don't tell anybody, but the whole sky's a phony...still from Martha's Vineyard, but a different spot. The light on the house was all genuine sunrise....maybe 5:00 AM.....no pain, no gain, huh?

I guess it depends on what you had behind the house before you replaced the sky, but I think a plainer sky would actually give the image more impact - the building is amazing and beautifully lit, so I'm not sure that you need to add a busy/pretty sky in addition. Just my 2cents...

The original sky was exceedingly plain....pretty much blownout white, as the exposure was done for the house. I can see your point about the intensity of that particular sky, but it did need something more than what was there.

Beautiful shot, great colors. This reminds me a lot of the Fairlawn Mansion off Lake Superior in Wisconsin.

Absolutely stunning and beautiful. The colors go together perfectly and the sky is just amazing

Amazing shot.. really like how you've took it, as in the angle.
But IMHO, the sky kind of distracts me off the building.

it's slightly tilted to the right. needs more foreground and sky to give it the size relationship it needs. Great color!
