Growing up I spent many a weekend in a blurry fog in the French Quarter but it wasn’t until recently that I discovered Algiers nestled across the Mississippi River over on the west bank. It’s the second oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, but my favorite by far; it’s has all the rich history of the Quarter, unique architect, but non of the rowdy crowds. Theresa and I went to visit my folks while my father was contracting with FEMA and had an apartment there.
As captivating as the old homes where during the day, the nights really seemed to allow the homes to speak. The old gas lighting just deepened the shadows and I swear I could hear the horse drawn buggies in the street. The whistle of the steamers traveling the river…you get the idea. No one ever said I lack imagination.
