Dawn at Wheldale
The night sky and a hard frost begin to soften as No.17 awaits the day shift. Lamps nearby provide most of the light, especially by the colliery entrance in the distance where the words WHELDALE COLLIERY are prominent. Note the bags of sand on the front and inside the cab, a precaution for ice on the track. December 1981.
This colliery had gone over to diesel but a trial was run with this Hunslet loco fitted with an automatic, underfeed stoker to allow single-manning.
The large size.
Techy stuff: Approx. 7am, quite a long, tripod exposure on Kodachrome 64 with an OM-2. Slide scan.
