Black Skimmers, Glossy Ibis, a few friends at The Meadows in Cape May
Cape May, NJ - 7/23/2015 - I took 500 plus pictures of Black Skimmers putting on a show in the afternoon and evening at this Nature Conservancy refuge in Cape May. I showed a lot of restraint to just show this short list. These birds are huge. with wing span close to four feet. The lower bill is longer than the upper bill so that they can use it to scoop up fish as they skim really fast along the surface of the water. Also in the same pool were families of Glossy Ibis, a single banded American Oystercatcher looking completely goofy and out of place, stately Greater Yellowlegs, a butterfly and lots of birds that were not as impressive as the Skimmers.
