Hughie: Best Viewed Large On Black
In a dark foreboding back alley littered with discarded needles and empty bottles of cheap drink not far from the centre of Dublin. The alley being the old rear lane behind a crumbling Georgian terrace of grand merchant houses lies an old stables, hidden away from the world.
Inside is Hughie’s place a stable of 4 horses. Hughie owns two of the most fantastic horse drawn carriages, hand made, sadly under tarpaulins at time I found his place but the craftsmanship on the parts I could see were amazing.. One a black funeral hearse the other a white Cinderella Wedding Carriage. One of the two of these in Dublin.
Hughie is a face of Dublin few meet a man of many opinions and ideas on everything from economy to crime to the local history.
The horse is Blackie, he also has two mottled white horses he told me were Lipizzaner Horses, for the wedding carriage. We talked for ages about how his trade has changed, that the horse drawn black hearses are popular with the drug-dealers for funerals and how ordinary folk are now shying away from hiring him.
I’ll be back to photograph him and his horses when the carriages are next out.
