White-breasted Nuthatch (m)

Valle Vista Staging Area (EBMUD), Contra Costa County, California

 

I always see Nuthatches on tree limbs or trunks, so I was suprised to find this one and its mate hopping around on the ground searching for insects amongst the trail litter.
