Datong River Sunset ***Explored***

As the sun sets behind the mountains rising up from the Datong River at Yaojie, 'SY' class 2-8-2 No.1097 with notwagons to return to the China Rail exchange sidings rattles over the river bridge returning from the alumina smelter to the loco shed as a 'light engine'. The Nanlingcheng Railway, as this is referred to, was opened in 1964 to connect the iron works at Nanlingcheng to the coal mines at Yaojie and traffic along this route is coal, alumina to the smelter and returning ingots.
