The date is 30th December 2009 and Huanan Coal Railway 760mm gauge 'C2' class 0-8-0s 041 and 168 struggle to keep a coal train on the move due to drifting snow along some exposed areas of the route between Xiahua and Huanan where, as well as a cutting wind, the temperature is around the -30c mark. This proved to be the last full operational day for several days with the staff giving in to the elements, despite valiant efforts being made to keep the line open. How the crews were able to see out of the cabs with so much leaking steam amazes me. The second locomotive is hidden by steam, but two locomotives were unusually being used in case the first one derailed in the drifts!
