Battle of the Books, HCLS 2015, Photos and Video
Part of A+ Partners in Education (a comprehensive partnership launched in 2002 among Howard County Library System, Howard County Public School System and Howard Community College), Battle of the Books is now held at five venues. More than 1,200 fifth grade students (one third of Howard County's fifth grade students) participate in this popular academic competition. The 240 teams each have four months to read 16 pre-assignged books, dream up team names, and dress the part. Then, on a Friday night in April, they gather to take a 50-question exam. Teams have 30 seconds to answer each question. First, second and third place winners for: Best Score, Best Team Name, Best Costume, Best Team Spirit, and Best Civility.

Reach (including parents, grandparents, and extended family): 20,000

Students improve reading, reading comprehension, and knowledge in many subject areas. They also learn teamwork and leadership skills.
