Sunken House 2015
Master Thatcher Alan Jones and Dafydd Driver of Pembrokeshire Thatch and Carpentry continue the experimental archaeology in thatching at West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village. The new Sunken House was thatched with techniques to minimise cordage, using straw ropes and willow wands. A weighted ridge was used in the style of continental examples.

At West Stow it is thought that the original sunken featured buildings were not like the Sunken House but were like the other reconstructions with a wooden floor over the pit. The Sunken House has been built to show an alternative idea.
