Euphorbia heterophylla, also known under the common names of (Mexican) fireplant, painted euphorbia, Japanese poinsettia,desert poinsettia, wild poinsettia, fire on the mountain, paintedleaf,painted spurge, milkweed, and kaliko plant, is a plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceae or spurge family.


Euphorbia heterophylla is a major weed problem in Australia, Fiji, Ghana, Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand, and a principal weed in Brazil, India, Italy, Papua New Guinea, Cuba, Honduras, Peru, Uganda and USA. Crops in which it is reported as a major weed include cocoa, coffee, cotton, cowpeas, maize, papaya, groundnut, sorghum, soyabean, sugarcane, tea and upland rice (Parsons and Cuthbertson,. Because of its rapid growth, it can be a serious competitor early in the life of the crop, competing for light as well as for water and nutrients.
