Stupid Truck Driver of the Week Photo
This truck driver entered a restricted length highway in Oregon, Hwy 242 heading west from Sisters, Oregon. He was pulling a 53 foot trailer with a full size tractor. The road is restricted to combinations under 35 feet. A US Forest Service law enforcement officer got the truck turned around, headed back to Sisters. This wreck occurred when the trucks "brakes failed" on a corner.
I would bet my last check as a retired long-haul truck driver that the driver was p@*#ed off at having to back track that he was speeding and could not negotiate this rather gentle curve. The chance of a truck's brakes failing are extremely remote. These types of trucks have air brakes that cause the brakes to lock up at the loss of air pressure.
Here is a link to the Oregon State Police posting of this event. And, here is a link to the Google Map image of Hwy 242. You can see the switch-backs and other tight turns on the highway. The route also crosses a lava bed in the mountains and has some very narrow spots. It literally would have been impossible for this truck and trailer to make it through to the end.
The truck driver was cited for Careless Driving and Violation of Posted Vehicle Limits.
