Above the gate is a niche which would originally have contained a statue of a saint, flanked by a coat of arms of the kings of England. Because of the legend, a statue of John of Gaunt was placed in the empty niche in the 19th century.[36] Three storeys high, the apartment on the ground floor would probably have been used by the Constable of the castle
