Salzburg, Austria
Salzburg is a beautiful city, but it's very touristy, much because it's where "The Sound of Music" was filmed. Of course I had to go on a bus tour. Would I do it again? No. It's not my style. Imagine sitting among a bus full of tourists singing "doe - a deer - a female deer, ray - a drop of golden suuuuunnnn..." I guess I thought I'd better do it since I was there, but never again. I'd rather figure it out on my own.

While staying at the youth hostal in Salzburg, I met a woman from Vienna named Ana who gave me some wonderful pointers on just the kind of hiking I like to do.

Salzburg isn't great for hiking really. Walking, yes, but the Alps are small in this part of Austria. Ana pointed me south near the Italian border to a small town called Lienz.

So, packed what I needed in my backpack, left my suitcase at the youth hostal in Salzburg and then bought a train ticket to Lienz. I would spend 5 incredible days in the mountains.
