Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt, c. 1915

Princess Marie-Auguste was the daughter of Eduard, Duke of Anhalt and his wife Princess Louise Charlotte of Saxe-Altenburg. She was born in 1898 in Ballenstedt, Anhalt, Germany.

In 1916 Marie-Auguste married Prince Joachim of Prussia, the youngest son of Wilhelm II, German Emperor, by his first wife, Augusta Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein. The couple had one son, Prince Karl Franz of Prussia.

After Emperor Wilhelm's abdication, Prince Joachim fell into a deep depression and committed suicide in 1920. Before his death, the couple had recently divorced, and it is thought this may also have contributed to his depression.

After the Prince's death his son Karl Franz was taken into custody by his paternal uncle Prince Eitel Friedrich. This was later declared to have been illegal, and his mother was given full custody of him in 1921.

Marie-Auguste remarried in 1926 to Johannes-Michael Freiherr von Loën, a childhood friend, this marriage ended in 1935, and she reverted to her maiden name.

Princess Marie Auguste died on 22 May 1983 at Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany.
