Trictena atripalpis, Canberra, ACT, Australia

Trictena are large Hepialids that fly to house lights during late Autumn on rainy nights. They are root feeders on Eucalyptus spp.. Most people have no idea they have a 150 mm moth living in their backyards, and sometimes think their pupae are some sort of weird fungus or lawn grubs! This female is freshly emerged in my yard and had a wingspan of 200 mm!
